Royal Hotel Narromine
After we successfully deciphering the cryptic clues John received in Mendooran, we did successfully coast into a petrol station and were thus able to continue this leg of the tour without walking, pushing a vehicle, or hitchhiking. And with our full tank of petrol, we motored on to our final Royal of the leg: the Royal Hotel Narromine.
We rolled into Narromine in the late afternoon and the golden light was really making the pub look awesome. The Royal Hotel Narromine is one of those old school weatherboard pubs with a corrugated metal roof with the name of the pub painted in giant letters on it. And in the fading afternoon light, it certainly looked the part.
After admiring the pub glow for a minute or two, we did eventually head in for a beer.
As you walk in the door, to the right was the bistro. With it still being the arvo, it was unsurprisingly pretty quiet. So we headed left into the main bar and TAB section. And that section was anything but quiet. There was a solid couple dozen patrons enjoying a boisterous Saturday arvo punt and a beverage or two.
So we figured it would be rude not to join them and grabbed ourselves some boisterous Saturday beverages of our own. The Royal Hotel Narromine actually had a decent selection of beers on offer. Especially compared to many of the Royals we’d hit that weekend. Plus there was a great array of Royal merch on offer. Not quite Tambar Springs levels, but still a good variety.
The atmosphere was fun and lively and a fair few of the locals were only too happy to have a chat. So naturally we had settled in for a couple to reminisce about the trip and the 8 Royals we’d hit.
It was during this reminiscence that Ben noticed a guy sitting at the back of the bar that he absolutely swore had also been at the Royal Hotel in Moree. Given Moree is 400km and about 4 1/2 hours away from Narromine, that was pretty remarkable. I hadn’t noticed the guy at the previous Royal and we had done a couple thousand km’s and 8 Royals worth of beer and travel to this point. But I am inclined to trust Ben’s judgement on the matter.
Overall, this was another one of those ‘really good but probably won’t crack the Top 10’ type of Royals. But it was a great way to cap off the trip. There was the absolutely classic exterior. But there was also the brick bar, tons of Royal merch, a fun crowd and a bunch of random stuff on the walls. That random stuff ranged from random sporting jerseys, to paintings of the pub from apparently from a bygone era, to slightly bawdy but still somewhat classy-looking paintings
But like so many Royals, we had to eventually call time on our beers there and bid goodbye to the random guy tailing us from Moree and to this leg of the Tour in general. This one was a good one to finish on though. Just a classic place and exactly the kind of pub we were hoping to get out and see when we started this whole half-ridiculous endeavour. If I find myself back in Narromine, this is definitely a place I’d come back to.
This was the last of the Royals that we have visited at the time of writing. But fear not as we are heading out on our next trip this coming weekend. There may, however, = be a slight break before I’m able to get those written up. So you might have a beer/brewery post to look forward to in the meantime. But we’ll be back soon with more Royals as well!
