Royal Hotel Moree
With memories of the mulled wine from Coonabarabran in our heads, we set off on day 2 of the trip and headed a couple of hours up the road to the Royal Hotel Moree.
We arrived at the Royal Hotel Moree mid-morning on a weekday. So we knew going in that what we saw of the pub wouldn’t be what it would usually look like in full swing. But bearing that in mind we headed in to grab some A.M. ales.
The bar staff did seem a little surprised to see us coming in that early. But they still agreed to serve us beers despite the hour. The other guys went with Cooper’s Pale Ales. But I opted for a reliable old VB. And as luck would have it, there was a promotion on. And I officially won the first prize ever won on the Royal tour!
So with schooners and my glorious prize in hand, we once again set out to do a lap of the pub. There was another really good looking bistro (although we were a fair bit too early for that, but the menu looked great) and some decent outdoor areas. But overall, it was pretty clear that this was a sports bar. The TAB area featured multiple pool tables and tons of huge screens. Granted at that time of the day/week, all there was to show was overseas racetracks. But on a weekend or big-game evening, this place would’ve been absolutely ideal!
We grabbed some stools at one of the several long tables and got the second day of the trip started properly. As I’ve mentioned, it’s sometimes hard to get a read on a pub when you’re there at a time like this. But I feel like we got a pretty decent sense of the place. The Royal Hotel Moree felt like the kind of place where you could relax over a schooner or two, but that could also get big on a weekend.
What it really felt like to me is an ideal Sunday session type pub. A place you could show up to for lunch and then stay on as the afternoon slate of footy progressed. And to be honest, that sounds like a pretty awesome way to spend a Sunday arvo. A good lunch, decent beers, mid arvo snacks, and 3 consecutive games of footy. Really, what more could you want?
Again, there are definitely signs that this is the kind of place that could conceivably get a bit boisterous on a given night. But it had strong hand-out pub vibes as well.
The slightly spartan nature of the beer garden as well as the signage on the way out did suggest that the Royal Hotel Moree had the potential to get a bit rowdy on a big night. But it still looks like the kind of place I’d gladly come for a feed and a game. And even though it wasn’t the most ornate, I could still picture that beer garden being packed on a Friday night.
Overall, this was a very good pub. Although again, it is one we had to try to use our imaginations a bit to picture it at a more crowded time than a weekday morning. But if I find myself up in Moree and I have a game I want to watch, this is 100% where I’m coming.
