Royal Stats

So as we’ve now hit 100 Royal hotels, I figured we might hold off on hearing about Royal 101 for just a sec. Instead, I know what the people really want: Royal Stats!

Now this is a little confusing because I’ve only written about 100 Royals. But we have made it to 103 at time of writing (3 outstanding Royals will have their own posts in the coming weeks). But all stats below reflect our progress with the visits (103) rather than the posts (100). I hope that makes sense. It probably doesn’t. But, anyway, on with the Royal stats!

Progress

Travel

As John and I live in different cities, the distance we’ve driven for the Tour thus far differs slightly. Currently I’ve travelled 102 more km than John has. And this is just driving. It doesn’t even count the 3,600 or so kilometres we’ve flown so far

Just for comparison, here are some distances of some other big drives you could do around the world that are shorter than the distance we’ve driven on the Tour so far:

Anchorage, Alaska to Panama City, Panama – 10,977 km
Lisbon, Portugal to Vladivostok, Russia – 13,568 km
Cape Town, South Africa to Helsinki, Finland – 15,070 km

In terms of time we’ve spent in the car, it breaks down to:

That’s a lot of time in the car together. That John and I are still mates at this point is a minor miracle.

Averages

And given that these stats take into account the 103 Royals we’ve visited to date. Those averages come out to:

So on average, we’ve driven for 2 hours or so to get to each Royal. Given that some were city Royals in Sydney and Melbourne, that gives you an idea of how far we have had to go so far to get to some of the outliers. And given the locations of a lot of the remaining Royals, I only expect those averages to increase between now and the end of the Tour.

Royal Extremes

Most Isolated Royal So Far

This is the Royal Hotel we’ve visited so far that is the furthest away from another Royal. This will most definitely change over the next year and a bit as we finish off some of the last Royals on our list. But for the first 100, the most isolated Royal is….. the Royal Hotel Portland.

It is 188km from the nearest other Royal (which happens to be our #1 overall Royal in Horsham). That only just edges out Meandarra which is 185km from Leyburn.

Closest Together Royals So Far

This was a tightly contested one as well. It took us less than 5 minutes to go the 3.7km between Lyndhurst and Mandurama on our Light Beer Lane segment of the Tour. But that was beaten by two Royals that were actually in different states. Barham (NSW) and Koondrook (VIC) are only 1.5 km apart on either side of the Murray River.

Smallest Royal Town

This one is not much of a contest at all. Mt Hope has this one easily with a listed population of 16. And to be honest that felt like a bit of an over-estimate.

Great pub, not too many locals

Anyway, that’s all the stats I have for now. We’ll be back next week with another actual Royal (#101). I hope you found these Royal stats as fun as I did. But if you didn’t, it’s my blog, you can indulge me for a week.
