Royal Hotel Wyong
The next (and second last) Royal on this particular leg of the Royal Tour was the Royal Hotel Wyong.
This was our first and only stop on the Central Coast for the tour as there’s a surprising lack of Royals in the Sydney to Newcastle stretch. We stopped in at 11:00 am on a Monday morning so it wasn’t exactly the peak time of day to properly evaluate a pub. And, as expected, it was pretty quiet.
But that being said, you could definitely tell that when it was busy, it would be an excellent place for a beer. The pub was slightly generic but there were a number of good open spaces to sit with a beer and the bistro menu looked pretty good as well.
The beer selection was also slightly better than we’d experienced at the past several Royals as well. We went for a comparatively up-market Stone & Wood.
One thing that did stick out a bit about the Royal Hotel Wyong was the amount of actual Royal memorabilia. That includes photos of a genuine royal visit! Or at least a genuine royal visit to within 100m or so. Apparently Queen Elizabeth II visited back in the 50’s (visited the train station across the road from the pub that is).
The history of the pub outside of the Queen’s visit was also pretty well documented on the walls of the pub. All the old-timey photos actually set off the slightly generic feel of some other parts of the pub nicely.
All in all, it wasn’t the greatest Royal we’ve hit so far, but it was actually pretty good. We ended up departing the Royal Hotel Wyong a bit before lunch time en route to our final Royal on this leg of the tour (and our first Royal Tour guest appearance).
