Royal Hotel Ryde

Editor’s Note: With John off on an overseas jaunt, this will be his last post until his return. So enjoy it while you can as I’ll be back on posting duties from here on out.

First stop on todays section of the Royal/I don’t feel like a beer so early Tour was the Royal Hotel Ryde.

Ryde the suburb did not seem welcoming. Hot. Hard to park. Absolutely no one outside. A bit of a Walking Dead vibe. The Royal Hotel Ryde itself didn’t seem welcoming either. I don’t really know why, but the outside gave both of us the creeps. Cory asked if we actually have to go in. But I figured there’s a good chance I’ll die in a pub anyway, and maybe that day had come. So we braved it and went in the front door and apparently through some sort of Magic Faraway Tree type portal.

Trying to contain our surprise at finding a pleasant, well-done up, and non-sketchy pub at 10:30 on a Sunday morning

The bar was darker, cool, nicely styled in an Irish theme that was done well and, at 10:30am had at least 12 old boys (and soon to be two handsome young devils) on the beers. It was the first pleasant surprise of the morning.

Interior photos were kept to a minimum so as not to potentially rile up the aforementioned old boys. Or give them an opportunity to initiate conversation

The second surprise came when I ordered a schooner, only to be told that if I ordered one of the other 6 on tap, I could get it for $5.50 because it was Happy Hour. Happy Hour goes each and every day from 10am til midday. That would explain the rapidly growing crowd in the bar. Happy Hour for two hour before midday every day. “Who are these drunks?!” I asked Cory as we started on our cheap beers.

Wendy Anne clearly keen to experience a 10am happy hour, as well as a slightly awkward group photo at a 10am happy hour

Soon after, Wendy Anne joined us. She was becoming a bit of a regular on the tour now. Or she might have just been on the beers at 10:30 and bumped into us. Hard to say.

Either way, the Ryde Royal was a wild ryde (get it?!) and a friendly joint, at least before 11am. Full of locals who set their alarm to remind them to go to the pub. And a nicely done up spot to have a beer/hide from zombies if need be (remember my Walking Dead Joke at the start? I’ve tied it back in here. Nice one)
