Royal Hotel Oberon

Editor’s note: After Hill End, the Royal Hotel Oberon is the second of John’s cameo posts. It’s a good one for him to take as well because, as John alludes to, I was barely functional at that point. Also, this will be the final post of the year before the blog returns in January with the Royal Tour‘s first interstate trip!

The Royal Hotel Oberon. Our first and last Royal for the day. An absolute freezing cold day. A day that would include Cory being on deaths door again, and me taking a roadside leak in the bush as the snow started to fall. But that in the future. Right now it was beer time, as is so often the case

Beer time.

The Royal Hotel Oberon was a good place to find yourself on a freezing cold day. It had the warm comfort level of your favourite grey tracksuit pants, but more ascetically appealing. The furniture, the functioning fireplace and the tartan carpet gave you permission to sink in your seat and hide from the freezing day outside.

You can definitely feel the coziness coming through the photo

Alas, we could only have one, or two. I think I had two. Cory, as the fully functioning adult, had responsibilities he had to get home to. Funnily enough, that’s what I remember most about this pub, having a proper conversation about the real world and the challenges coming up for both of us.

That’s what makes a good pub I think sometimes, just a place to stop and think and talk to mates. Sometimes the talk is about beer styles, sometimes it’s about the future and fears. Most often it’s beer styles. Either way, the Oberon Royal is a place I’d go back to and hide from the cold again, next time I’d want to do both for a little longer.
