Royal Hotel Mundubbera

After finishing up at Mt Larcom the day before and a great night out in Agnes Water and 1770, we departed for the last Royal on this leg of the tour: the Royal Hotel Mundubbera.

The leg from Agnes Water to Mundubbera was our longest of this leg of the tour clocking in at about 3 1/2 hours. That trip was apparently made a bit longer if you religiously follow Google maps down unsealed country Queensland roads. The car containing John, Turner, Big Al, and Bull followed that route. The result was a 70k stretch of pothole dodging, bottoming out, and periodic stops to make sure all vital parts of the car were still attached.

Flexing their collective mechanical knowledge to confirm all car pieces and passengers were probably still there

We were following a bit behind. So when we got reports from the other car, we were able to re-route through the picturesque town of Gin Gin. That put us a little bit later, but with a much higher degree of confidence that the underside of our vehicle was still in tact.

We eventually all arrived in the town of Mundubbera in the North Burnett region of Queensland. Mundubbera is the self-proclaimed ‘Citrus Capital of Queensland’. That’s also a title claimed by the town of Gayndah about 20 minutes down the road. Although Gayndah also claims to be the oldest town in Queensland. So as I see it, Gayndah either already has their own thing, or they are just greedy and overclaiming notoriety. So either way, I’m inclined to lean towards Mundubbera on their Citrus Capital claim.

There may have bit bits of their car hanging off, but they made it

The Royal Hotel Mundubbera is one of two pubs in town. It’s good sized with a front veranda, front bar, pool table area, and good-sized bistro. The front bar was fairly standard and while the bar maid was friendly and welcoming, if I’m being honest, a few of the looks from the locals were less than.

This area would have been absolutely packed probably 7 hours after we left

We had a beer on the front veranda and then headed on to grab some lunch in the bistro. And the bistro is where the pub really shined. The front was a bit of a ‘little bit rough but still nice enough’ type vibe. But when we wandered through to the bistro, we found a genuinely pleasant and welcoming space.

That’s a genuinely good bistro

The bistro lady was great value and the food was excellent. Not just like solid but standard pub fare (which would’ve been more than fine). It was genuinely good food. Among us we had everything from burgers to pizza to barramundi. And all of it was really really good.

Definitely the kind of place I’d frequent for a meal if I lived in Mundubbera

After lunch we had enough time to hang around for another schooner before heading off. As we wandered around the pub, we confirmed that the Royal Hotel Mundubbera definitely achieved ‘Good Solid Royal’ status. It’s another one that might not necessarily threaten the Top 10 list. But if we had ended up there for the night we could have easily had a good time. It really had everything you’d want in a pub: a good bistro, a good amount of space, pool table, and a bunch of random stuff on the walls (and floor).

Leave it to John to instantly identify any Tigers memorabilia. I think it’s his inbuilt commiseration radar

Some of the signage was a bit random (especially the multiple signs instructing patrons to kiss at the Royal). But hey, we love our bespoke Royal signage whether it is instructing romance or not.

I’m gonna assume this relates to some specific event. But it did come off as a bit of a random attempt at Royal romance

Eventually we finished our final schooners for the trip and piled back into the cars for the long drive back to the Sunshine Coast. For our car, that drive lasted all of 20 minutes until Jon needed to desperately make a stop in Gayndah. But then we were on our way. The Royal Hotel Mundubbera capped off another great leg of the tour. And this trip took us over the hundred mark back in Tiaro, and over halfway in terms of Queensland Royals. I think for the first time, we’ve actually started thinking about the finish line for the Tour. That’s still probably a year and a bit away, but it’s visible in the distance. And the next steps towards that finish line will be our next trip in June. So expect a couple old-fashioned beer/brewery reviews between now and then before we get back to the Royals.
