Royal Hotel Gilgandra

After departing Yeoval, we had a bit more of a straightforward drive to our next Royal. So after about an hour and a half we arrive at the Royal Hotel Gilgandra.

The streets were still glistening with rain from the storm that we had just ridden out at the Royal in Yeoval. And we arrived to find a true classic Royal. The Royal Hotel Gilgandra is a corner pub that’s all verandas and brick facade. It’s the kind of pub you’d get if you typed ‘classic country pub’ into the AI image generator of your choice.

Ben sure can take a good photo. We gotta get him along to all the Royals from now on (both for his photography skills and his general good-dude-ness).

Going inside, we found just the interior just as classic as the exterior. There was a two-sided, wood-paneled bar serving both of the main areas of the pub. And there were plenty of tall tables and plenty of space to spread out and relax.

That’s a classic pub. Try not to get distracted by the three gentlemen in the foreground

Around the back there was also a good-sized dining room. Even better was the pool room complete with Dungeons & Dragons arcade game. Throw in the big TV and that room just screams Sunday session.

It would be super easy to lose several hours of a weekend arvo in this room

But out in the beer garden was the crowning feature of the pub. The Royal Hotel Gilgandra has a truly impressive grape vine in its beer garden that is apparently both over 130 years old AND still producing grapes. We’ve been to a fair few Royals and that’s a first. And a pretty cool first at that. If it were a bit warmer and dryer, I would’ve been keen to sit out under that vine for at least a couple of schooners.

That grape vine is thicker than my torso. And I have a thick torso!
I would’ve gladly hung out in this beer garden for an extended period of time on a nicer day.

We stayed for a couple of schooners (in the warm and dry part of the pub), but could have easily stayed longer at this one. But our inadvertent detour earlier in the day meant we were a bit short on time and still had to make it to Coonabarabran before dark. So we had to move on. But I would strongly recommend a stop in at the Royal Hotel Gilgandra if you find yourself in that part of the world.

And if you need provisions before hitting the road, they’ve got you covered there as well
