Royal Hotel Wallerawang

After departing the Royal Hotel Springwood, we completed our trek through the Blue Mountains. Just after coming out the other side we arrived at the next Royal for the tour, the Royal Hotel Wallerawang.

The Wang (as I presume it must be affectionately referred to by locals) is a fairly small town with a big giant power plant, The main drag is pretty much what you’d expect. The one slightly unique thing was that the town’s two pubs are located directly next to each other. Well, except for what looked like a small yellow house situated directly between the two.

As for the pubs themselves, there was a cool old-timey vibe with verandahs and trellises and old metalwork. And then there was the Royal Hotel Wallerawang. With greatest respect, the Royal basically looks like a large concrete box. But if there’s anything we’ve learned from the first 30 Royals on this tour, it’s: Don’t judge a Royal by it’s exterior. We’re currently workshopping that phrase so it reads better on a t-shirt. So in we headed.

Almost, but not quite empty

We strolled in to a largely empty pub with a barman that did not look particularly thrilled to see us. We grabbed a couple of schooners and sat down by the fireplace and felt quite at home. It turns out, the Royal Hotel Wallerawang was a comfy, welcoming place to enjoy a beer. This welcoming feeling was no doubt reinforced for John by the fact the bathrooms were apparently fitted out with the exact same tiles as his Gran’s.

But it also could well have been the large outdoor area. And that area looked like it definitely had the potential to go off on a weekend summer arvo. Or the unexpectedly friendly barman, who kept the fire well fed and laughed at our jokes about how much Ed Sheeran sucks.

On a slightly warmer day, this would be the place to hang out

All in all, Wallerawang was very much another ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ Royal. And yes, I know that’s not the workshopped phrase form above. We’re still working on that.

Basically, no, it’s not super fancy. But it’s an honest, comfortable place for a schooner or three.
