Royal Hotel Spring Ridge

The next stop on the Royal Tour was in our smallest town to date with an official population of under 400: the Royal Hotel Spring Ridge.

We had a bit of an adventure navigating some flooded backroads between Manilla and Spring Ridge. But after retreating to the main highways and taking a chance on the ominously named Mystery Road, we finally rolled into town on a dreary, rainy Sunday arvo.

As we had just admitted defeat in the face of flooded backroads, it was some relief that we made it to Spring Ridge just as the heavens opened and the rain started. But by the time it really started coming down we were safely sheltered in the Royal Hotel Spring Ridge with a beer in hand, sitting near a crackling fire.

Given the size of Spring Ridge, you might expect the pub to be the central meeting place and centre of activity in town. And you’d be right. Even on a dreary Sunday, there was a solid dozen or so people (a reasonable percentage of the town to be fair) enjoying the royal hospitality.

We could only stay for a beer, but it was tempting to get properly settled into this Royal Hotel

Again that didn’t necessarily make it by any means crowded. But it did mean there was a bit of a convivial atmosphere already happening when we wandered in. The locals (resident pub Jack Russell’s included) had wisely shot-gunned the seats closest to the fireplace. But there was still plenty of good places to enjoy a beverage.

Fortunately for us, the rain storm that started just as we arrived abated almost exactly as we finished our schooners. We would’ve like to stay for another. But we took that as a sign that the pub-crawl-gods had deemed it time to move on. So we put the witty pub banter on hold and bundled ourselves back into the car and headed out for the next Royal. Next stop: Murrurundi!
