Royal Hotel Scone

The second Royal on the trip up to Tamworth was the Royal Hotel Scone. The “Horse Capital of Australia” is tucked right up against the Great Dividing Range and is home to a proper old school Royal Hotel. It’s probably the most old school Royal Hotel we’ve visited so far.

Me enjoying a schooner with a weird look

The bar itself (i.e. the actually bar bit that you get served over/prop yourself up against) is MASSIVE. It wraps fully around the front bar area of the pub. Equally massive were the two screens that took up entire walls at one end of the bar. As you might expect in a country pub early on a Saturday arvo, one was showing horse, harness, and greyhound racing (not all three at the same time, that would be chaos) and the other was showing NSW Cup rugby league ahead of the evening’s NRL games.

Add to that the three locals propping up the bar and having a punt and it was the quintessential country NSW Royal Hotel tableau.

The unique award for the Royal Hotel Scone came from the perfect synchronisation of said locals who looked up from their beers/conversation to watch the lady who walked through the pub shortly after we arrived. The turning in unison was like those clowns whose mouths you try to shoot water into at a carnival.

I’d have another beer here

Despite the brief incident of distinctly unsubtle ogling of the locals who happened to be in on that day, I’d still rate the Royal Hotel Scone as a decent place to relax with a beer. And it was the EXACT type of place I was envisioning when we embarked on this Royal Tour
