Royal Hotel Murrurundi
From Spring Ridge, we ventured an hour down the road to a marginally larger town and our next stop on the Royal Tour: the Royal Hotel Murrurundi.
Pulling up, our first thought was that this may be the shmickest looking royal we’ve hit so far. Apparently it used to be a Cobb & Co Coach stop and it definitely looked like it. It’s got a cool old-school sandstone-y type look to it. And the very old school Toohey’s signage at the entrance to the beer garden certainly didn’t detract from the overall vibe.
Heading inside and it was more of the same. Very cool and very nice without veering into swanky/wanky territory. At least that goes for the main/front bar area. There were some rooms further back that may have crossed the swanky threshold. Including one I can only describe as a banquet room or a formal dining room or something. In any event it had a chandelier.
But on the whole, it was the perfect level of niceness without going over the top into “try-hard-fancy”. And it’s still a place that local tradesmen would (and did) still feel fully comfortable downing a few schooners in after work.
There was accommodation available as well. And, while we didn’t end up staying or even getting a look at the rooms, I kinda wish we did. If they were done up in the same style and quality as the rest of the pub, they would’ve been pretty cool I reckon. Also I would’ve loved to sit and have several schooners at the Royal Hotel Murrurundi, so having stayed the night would’ve facilitated that as well. But we had other Royals to visit and beers to drink so we hit the road on the way back to the upper Hunter and our final Royal of the day.
