Royal Hotel Beenleigh

After leaving Kalbar for the city and recovering from our night out at the footy, we dragged ourselves out of bed and headed for another morning Royal at the Royal Hotel Beenleigh.

Some pubs we get to in the morning hours are a little bit iffy as to whether or not they’ll actually be open when we arrive. There were no such concerns when we arrived at the Royal Hotel Beenleigh. A large sign in the carpark reassured us that not only was the pub open, but it would remain open for the next 17 hours as well.

Luckily we didn’t arrive in the 6 hours they are closed

Reassured that we would not be turned away, but a bit nervous about what our fellow morning pub patrons would look like, we headed in.

Putting on a manly show before heading inside

Once we got in, it was a nice enough place. It definitely had the feel like it would get a bit rough on a Friday night. But it wasn’t an uncomfortable place to be. And, as a bonus, this was yet another pub that gave us discounts via that app we first encountered in Essendon. So with our $7 schooners in hand we went for a wander around. It turns out that the Royal Hotel Beenleigh is a good sized pub. It definitely felt like it would be a good place to watch a big game as well.

That’s my ‘I’m tough’ look

However, we soon found out that it depended very much what type of sporting event we were talking about. After we had found a table and were enjoying out beers, a guy walked in and asked the bartender if they were showing the UFC fight later that day. The bartender explained that, sadly, they could no longer show UFC events as fights always broke out. So just to repcap, the clientele of the Royal Hotel Beenleigh were apparently unable to watch a fight on TV without deciding that ‘you know what, punching someone is a great idea, I think I’ll do that now’.

Not a bad pub for a game, although a bit more Scandinavian in styling that I would’ve expected on the Gold Coast

Even better, the bartender directed that particular patron to another pub up the road. One that would be showing the UFC fight. However, as it turns out, the guy was already barred from that pub. Which kind of gave us the feeling that the Royal Hotel Beenleigh’s UFC policy might have come about because of guys exactly like him. But again, it felt fine while we were there. A little on the rough side, but nothing too concerning.

There are a lot of Royals we hit on this tour where we think ‘gee I wish we could see what this place was like on a busy night’. This was not one of those. I feel like we might have hit this one at exactly the right time of day. Definitely not the worst. But also not one we’d probably go out of our way to get back to. And so we headed back north towards the final stop on this leg of the tour.

Editor’s Note: As Beenleigh was Royal number 90 next week’s post will be an update of our Top 10 list.
