Kumma Gutza DIPA by Little Rivers Brewing

I know it’s only been a few weeks since I last wrote about them and their fantastic Detonate IPA, but Little Rivers’ Kumma Gutza Double IPA has compelled me to take the blog back to Scottsdale, Tasmania once again.

As I mentioned in my previous Detonate post, I had tried some of Little Rivers’ core range on a trip to Tasmania last year and was impressed.  So when I decided to do a bit of a lockdown craft beer splurge, I opted to take a flyer on their Detonate IPA, and boy am I glad I did.  You can go back to the full Detonate post to read the full review, but suffice to say it was stupendous.

It looks almost as good as it tastes. Almost.

On the strength of that, I went back to Little Rivers to order a second round.  And this one included their Kumma Gutza DIPA.   With how good the Detonate was, my hopes for the Kumma Gutza were pretty darn high.  Even with that high bar to clear, it met and exceeded every one of my expectations.

All that plus a ton of hops!

Everything that made the Detonate so good is cranked up several notches with the Kumma Gutza.  The punchy hops and the kick of citrus are both there and both magnified even further.  Yet somehow, neither ends up being overpowering.  This is definitely still a beer for lovers of IPA’s and general hoppiness.  But it doesn’t fall into the trap of hops-for-hops-sake like many other IPA’s (and especially double IPA’s) that just chuck in as many hops as possible without regard for the overall taste and balance of the beer. It’s definitely a hopped up brew, but importantly it’s an overall delicious beer, not just a hop delivery system. And again this is coming from an avowed hop-head.

A good kick at 7.5% without going too far over the top

Everything I’ve had from Little Rivers is really good and more than worth a try.  But it’s in their handling of the extra hoppy end of the spectrum that they really excel.  The Detonate IPA is fantastic.  The Kumma Gutza DIPA is even more so.  If hops are your thing, they are two you need to seek out.  These are two of my favourite new beers I’ve discovered in some time. And my one-off quarantine case is now going to be a regular order going forward.
