DDH Hazy IPA by Otherside Brewing
There was a time when every crafty brewery in Australia was pumping out a hazy IPA just for the sake of it. That may no longer be the case, but that does mean that those that are still being produced are being produced with deliciousness rather than just trendiness in mind. And DDH Hazy IPA by Fremantle’s Otherside Brewing is one delicious beer!
Otherside Brewing has a bit of an interesting backstory as well. Apparently, they started out as a gypsy brewing outfit with the intention of making a single batch specially for a music festival in Perth. It turned out even better than expected and they decided to give this brewing thing a proper go. And I, for one, am very glad they did.
The DDH Hazy IPA is one of those rare IPA’s that is very hoppy without being overly bitter. It comes in at a mere 15 IBU, which is ridiculously low for an IPA of any sort. The citrus and stonefruit flavours soften the bitterness of the hops. This beer, however, avoids the common hazy IPA mistake of veering too far over to the citrus-y/fruitiness end of the spectrum as well. While it may not have the bitterness of a typical IPA, it still has the kick of one coming in at 6.8%. But, as with everything else about this beer, that feels just right. It’s perfectly balanced and perfectly delicious.
With the glut of moderate quality hazy IPA’s that inundated with during the height of that trend, it’s really refreshing (both figuratively and literally) to drink this beer and be reminded with a damn good beer of that genre can actually be.
