Cory’s Top 20 – Honourable Mentions
This will not come as a surprise to anyone, but I love beer. And lucky for me, there’s an awful lot of extremely good beer going around here in Australia these days. But that also meant narrowing it down to Cory’s Top 20 was always going to be a difficult task. As such, I feel compelled to acknowledge a few breweries that I still love, but that fell agonizingly short of making the top 20. In no particular order here are Cory’s Top 20 – Honourable Mentions:
Resin Brewing
Location: Bulli, NSW
Favourite Beers: Double Dump IIPA, Flame Tree Amber Ale, Olfaction NEIPA
Previous Blog Appearances: Double Dump IIPA
Great Wollongong area brewery with excellent food, a really well designed venue, and some excellent beer. That they opened at the height of lock-down but are still going strong is testament to the quality they’re producing. I personally own a Resin growler and T-shirt
Smiling Samoyed Brewery
Location: Myponga, SA
Favourite Beers: Poppet Strong Hoppy Brown Ale, Heart Breaker Red IPA, Hop Thief NEIPA
Previous Blog Appearances: Smiling Samoyed Brewery
Situated near predominantly wine country in a small regional town, Smiling Samoyed is a fantastic surprise. Excellent beers in some less common styles (the Poppet being of particular note). Plus all beers purchased on-site are enjoyed in the company of large friendly fluffy white dogs.
Six String Brewing Company
Location: Erina, NSW (Central Coast)
Favourite Beers: Dark Red IPA, TPA Tropical Pale Ale, Double Dark Red IPA
Previous Blog Appearances: Dark Rep IPA
If I had to pick my favourite style of beer, it would have to be red IPA. Not only is Six String’s flagship beer the excellent Dark Red IPA, they frequently release equally excellent variants on it. If for nothing else than absolutely nailing my favourite variety of beer as their flagship offering, they deserve an honourable mention.
Little Bang Brewing Company
Location: Stepney, SA (Adelaide)
Favourite Beers: Sludgebeast Imperial Stout, Face Inverter Sour, 50 Dalrymple IIPA
Previous Blog Appearances: Little Bang Brewing Company, Sludgebeast Imperial Stout
I’d been aware of Little Bang for a little while and enjoyed what I’d had of theirs. But it wasn’t until a recent visit to the brewery in Adelaide that I realized the breadth and quality of what they have on offer. The fact the my 3 favourite beers they make are an imperial stout, a sour, and a IIPA should be a good indication of the quality they produce across a wide variety of beer styles.
Blasta Brewing Co
Location: Burswood, WA (Perth)
Favourite Beers: Chain Breaker IPA, Grimster Rocks Mosaic APA, Unleash the Beast NEIPA
Previous Blog Appearances: Blasta Brewing Co
Blasta probably has the title of best and most unique food I’ve had at a brewery. The haggis spring rolls and black pudding pizza spring to mind as examples that don’t sound like they should really work, but end up being delicious. Of course all the food would be meaningless on a list like this if it weren’t for the stellar beer that comes with it (especially their hoppier offerings). If I’m only in Perth for one night, Blasta is generally where I go.
