Cory’s Top 20 – #3 Otherside Brewing
Rank: #3
Location: Fremantle, WA
Favourite Beers: Headliner IIPA, Harvest Red Ale, Woody Barrelson Imperial American Brown
Previous Blog Appearances: Otherside Brewing, DDH Hazy IPA, Woody Barrelson
We are now officially into the top 3 of the list. And for that, we return to Western Australia and Otherside Brewing.
The one down side of Otherside is that it has a slightly irritating backstory. It was apparently founded by some music industry professionals who decided to dabble in beer. But it’s only annoying in so far as it turned out they were ridiculous good at what initially was a side hustle. Because now they churn out some of the absolute best beer in Australia. And I think that is definitely an excellent result for all craft beer drinkers.
The beers that Otherside produce are varied, but uniform in their brilliance. My favourite three (as listed above) include one each from their core range, creative releases, and experimental range. The quality of beers runs right from the standard fare to the slightly out there limited releases. And that speaks volumes about the quality of the overall brewery.
The Harvest Red Ale is a great place to start with a roasty caramely sweetness perfectly offset with a sneaky hoppy kick. I rate it as one of the best reds I’ve had. And it’s one that they just make as part of their core day-to-day range. Kicking it up a notch is the Headliner IIPA, which is behind maybe only Pirate Life’s IIPA and Little Rivers’ Kumma Gutza in terms of Aussie IIPA’s. It’s just a mouthful of hoppy brilliance. And the Woody Barrelson is a perfect rich brown ale. But it comes with a sneaky, and equally perfect hoppy hit that rolls up on you at the very end.
But those are just the three best of a myriad of genuinely great beers. Other brews like the DDH Hazy IPA, Anthem IPA, and Sabbath Pastry Stout all deserve their own write ups. So I recommend just getting to Fremantle and trying for yourself.
